Lucian Max Flanery
1944-2003

Max FlaneryThe California Geological Survey is sad to announce that Max Flanery lost his fight with cancer on Thursday, July 10, 2003.  Max, with his unique sense of humor, energy, dedication, resourcefulness, dependability, creativeness and enthusiasm epitomized the best of the collective qualities among us all. Max was CGS Outreach! He was tireless in his outreach efforts to promote DOC/CGS publications, programs and activities. He was known far and wide among our sister state and federal agencies and professional and private organizations where he set up exhibits and displays and participated in field trips. Max started his career with the Division of Mines and Geology in 1987 as an editorial aide. Over the course of his career he contributed many articles and outstanding photographs to California Geology magazine and other CGS publications. Although Max's working title was Photographer, he was in fact a spokesperson/ambassador for CGS when talking to and interacting with school-age children, teachers and the public. He will be missed!

Max was born August 25, 1944 in Vallejo, CA. He grew up in Woodland, attending Woodland schools. He served a three-year tour of duty in the U.S. Army. He was a Spec-5 Sergeant, serving in the special forces in Germany and Italy. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science at Sacramento State University.

In his position as Senior Photographer for CGS, Max was known for his keen sense of form and color. We wanted to share some of his best efforts so that others might appreciate Max's vision. Click on image to see larger version.
